Badenoch and Stride Decry 'Labour's War on Business' as Tax Hikes Hit Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight – Senior Conservative figures Kemi Badenoch and Mel Stride visited the Isle of Wight earlier this August to meet with local entrepreneurs who, they say, are being crushed by the Labour government's punitive tax hikes.

During their visit, the ministers highlighted the impact of what they termed, "Labour's Jobs Tax", blaming the policy for a wave of business closures and job losses on the island and across the country. They warned that businesses struggling to stay afloat are leading to fewer opportunities for people to work.

The pair pointed to national figures to underscore their concerns. According to statistics they cited, there are now 1.1 million more people on Universal Credit than when Labour took office in July 2024. They also stated that unemployment has reached a four-year high and that GDP growth has been halved under the current administration.

Looking ahead, Badenoch and Stride accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of threatening to 'come back in the Autumn for even more' tax increases. They argued that Labour cannot continue to break its promises by raising taxes further, asserting that such a move cannot be the solution to the country's economic challenges.

The visit concluded with a stark message for the government. "Labour’s war on business cannot continue", a statement following the visit read. "Starmer must act before it's too late".
