Labour MPs Condemn the Bombing of Iran

London — Senior Labour MPs have condemned the US and Israeli bombing of Iran as, "illegal", and a, "reckless", act of aggression, warning that the strikes risk plunging the Middle East into chaos.

In a series of posts on X, prominent backbenchers criticized President Donald Trump over the military action, arguing that the attacks violate international law and endanger British security.

Dame Emily Thornberry, who chairs the influential Foreign Affairs Select Committee, welcomed the UK’s decision not to participate in the strikes but warned of severe repercussions for Britain. “I am pleased to see the UK is not involved in these strikes on Iran,” she posted. “They are ill-advised and illegal.”

The senior MP predicted a volatile fallout from the military action. “We will be hit by the consequences though and need to prepare for chaos in the region, with shipping lanes, oil facilities and military bases (including our own) being attacked.”

Fellow backbencher Richard Burgon also voiced strong opposition, describing the bombing as a violation of international sovereignty.

“The bombing of Iran by the US and Israel is an illegal act of aggression which makes the world less safe,” Burgon said. “It risks inflaming the Middle East. We must oppose Trump’s reckless ripping up of international law which makes the world less safe.”

The criticism extended to former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. In a statement, Mr. Corbyn—who currently sits as an independent MP after having the Labour whip removed over antisemitism—called for the UK government to take a firm diplomatic stance against the action.

“The attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States are illegal, unprovoked and unjustifiable,” Mr. Corbyn wrote. “Our government must condemn this flagrant breach of international law, and urgently pursue a foreign policy based on justice, sovereignty and peace.”

The intervention by the Labour MPs highlights the growing domestic pressure on the government regarding its foreign policy alignment with the United States, even as official channels maintain distance from the military operation.
